Currently we have both a classic yacht and a more modern vessel available for both skippered charter and training purposes. We hope to be taking Musketeer to several classic yacht events both here and in Northern France.
Spaces will be fairly limited and on a first come first served basis so please contact the office on 01202 666118 for further details.
Musketeer of Stutton
RYA Sail Cruising Scheme Courses and private tuition can be provided on our school boat or your own vessel (subject to its suitability) with our instructors travelling to you.
Start Yachting Duration 2 Days. No Minimum Age. No Experience Required.
This two day course is an introduction to sailing and is the perfect way for those with no experience of sailing to try the sport before committing to more lengthy and expensive courses. At the end of the course candidates should expect to have a basic understanding of yachting, covering - the yacht, ropework, underway, rules of the road, man overboard recovery, clothing and equipment, emergency equipment, precautions and meteorology.
Students holding the Start Yachting Certificate can go on to complete Competent Crew in the reduced time of 3 days or 2 weekends
Competent Crew Duration 5 Days. No Age Limit. No Experience Required Learn how to sail the above vessel with expert tuition from our team of dedicated instructors. The RYA "comp crew" course is the beginning to your sailing career. Learn how to helm, hoist sails and integrate as part of a close knit team aboard our training vessel 'Musketeer of Stutton'.
Day Skipper Practical Duration 5 Days. Minimum Age 16.
Experience - 5 days, 100 miles, 4 night hours on board a sailing yacht. Basic navigation and helmsmanship. It is recommended by the RYA that candidates complete the Day Skipper shorebased course beforehand
Moving on from "comp crew" we teach you how to take command of the vessel and crew, to get the best from both the sails and your fellow students. Taking the boat out for 5 days you will cover a distance of over 100 miles under both sail and power (dependant on wind), whilst learning how to manoeuver in confined spaces, how to sail to the best of your abilities in open waters, how to navigate with both traditional and electronic methods, giving you the knowledge and skills to skipper a vessel by day in familiar waters.
Throughout your five days aboard you will also cover preparation for sea, deck work, navigation, pilotage, meteorology, rules of the road, maintenance and repair work, engines, victualling, emergency situations, yacht handling under power, yacht handling under sail, passage making and night cruising.
Coastal Skipper Duration 5 Days. Minimum Age 17.
Experience - 15 days, 2 days as skipper, 300 miles, 8 night hours. Boat handling to the standard of Day Skipper and navigation to the level of shore-based Coastal Skipper
An intensive course that looks to build upon the experiences and knowledge you have gained through the sea miles previously acquired on either your own or chartered vessel. This course advances your skippering skills to enable you to undertake more challenging coastal passages by day and night, boat handling in more adverse conditions and a deeper all round knowledge. At the end of the course you should have knowledge to gain the experience to take you to the lofty heights of Yachtmaster.
It is strongly recommended that students have previously attended the Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster shore-based theory course, as the intensity of the training does not afford time for covering this element of the course.
Yachtmaster Exam Prep Minimum age 18 The Yachtmaster Certificate of Compentence is an extremely demanding exam and for which their is no formal training course, unlike the Day and Coastal Skipper Certificates. However, many candidates undertake tuition in preparation for their Yachtmaster exam to ensure they have the required level of skill and knowledge. As there is no formal course, the tuition can be flexbile to suit the needs of each candidate and focuson areas that perhaps may need the most attentiion.
The Yachtmaster Exam Minimum Age 18 To take the exam, candidates can book throuh the RYA or training centre and can complete on either their own boat or a training centre vessel. The examiner is provided by the RYA.
Experience Required - 50 days, 2,500 miles including at least 5 passages over 60 miles, measured along the rhumb line from the port of departure to the destination, acting as skipper for at least two of these passages and including two which have involved overnight passages. 5 days experience as skipper. At least half this mileage and passages must be in tidal waters. All qualifying seatime must be within 10 years prior to the exam.
Certification Required - a restricted (VHF only) Radio Operators Certificate or a GMDSS Short Range Certificate or higher grade of marine radio certificate. A valid first aid certificate (first aid qualifications held by Police, Fire and Armed Services are acceptable).
Duration - 8-12 hours for 1 candidate, 10-18 hours for 2 candidates. No more than two candidates can be examined in 24 hours and no more than four candidates can be examined in one 2 day session.
